Ape Shapes

Like all cartoons, apes begin with shapes! Use some of the beginner skills you've learned to draw a cute cartoon ape from some simple shapes.

SOMETIMES WE USE MATERIALS THAT REQUIRE ADULT SUPERVISION...LIKE SCISSORS...SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AROUND WHENEVER YOU DO CARTOONING!

1. Draw a pear or guitar shape. Draw a second one inside the top half, and draw a line going across, to show a short forehead.
2. Draw a diamond shape right in the middle for his nose, 2 U’s for the eyes. Put the pupils close together, to make him look zany. Draw one eyebrow going up, the other going down to show that he’s happy but not too sure.
3. From his nose, draw a line to divide face, and draw a long squiggly line for his mouth.
4. Draw a lower lip to the side and silly hair coming out on top and behind his ears.
5. Draw a gorilla face, with his ears up high, and long hairs coming out top of head and behind ears.
6. Draw a wavy line for his chest. To create legs, draw 2 curved lines coming out from the bottom center. Apes have short legs in relation to their massive body.
7. Go back over arms and along side his body and draw jagged lines for hair. Draw a ground line, a bit behind him.
8. Color his fur and hair reddish brown, using jagged lines. Use tan for body and face, feet and hands. Use red for his cheeks.
9. To draw funny feet, make a curved heel, heavy line for bottom, and long, curved toes and fingers. Use long curved lines for the arms. Hands should come down to the floor, but not below his feet, and facing backwards.
