Arrrgh! Watch Captain Bruce transform the name Joe into a scruffy cartoon pirate. It's a cool doodle trick that you can show off to all your mateys!

Pad of paper
Pencil
Marker
Colored chalks or colored pencils
Eraser

SOMETIMES WE USE MATERIALS THAT REQUIRE ADULT SUPERVISION...LIKE SCISSORS...SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AROUND WHENEVER YOU DO CARTOONING!

  1. Write the name “Joe” using script (cursive). Make the “O” like an eye, by drawing a half circle and filling it in. Give him a thick eyebrow going up.
  2. Draw a line from the “J” to the “E” to create his facial outline. Stop below the “E” and draw an ear in, with just a couple lines inside the ear to show detail.
  3. Make a smooth line from the top of the J that meets the top of his ear. Draw a line intersecting the E for his bandana, and turn that loopy part of the E into polka dots. Make a circle and two teardrop shapes for where it’s tied around his head.
  4. Put in an earring (double oval). Draw in a jagged line for the mouth, and a small line where it meets his cheek. Give him square cartoon teeth.
  5. Fill in the top part of the J for his eye patch, and make a line over the bandana to hold it on to his head.
  6. Add dots for his stubble Use red for his cheeks and tongue, grey for his hair, peach for skin, and a little bit of light blue for 5 o’clock shadow. Use yellow for his bandana and earring, and red for polka dots. Add some red lines around his face to make him glowing and happy.
