Get to know your ancestry while making a craft project that’s perfect for a holiday gift! All you need to get started are some photos, construction paper, and scissors!

green construction paper
crayons
pen
glitter glue
scissors
elastic cord
hole punch
paper cup
lump of clay
glue stick
tree branch

REMEMBER THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WORK UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION. SOMETIMES WE USE THINGS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL, LIKE A SEWING NEEDLE, SO DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE THESE CRAFT PROJECTS ALONE.

  1. To get started…take a journey into your backyard or a neighboring park and search for a tree twig that’s sturdy and has lots of stems.
  2. Take a chunk of clay and place it into a plastic or paper cup. Place the twig firmly in the clay so that it remains erect.
  3. Start cutting out big leaves from the green construction paper. Each leaf will represent one person in your family. Make your leaves big enough to hold each person's name and a photo of them.
  4. Write the names of the each person in your family on to the individual leaves. Glue on your pictures.
  5. Take your hole punch and make a hole on the end of each leaf.
  6. Take your thread and cut off 5 inch pieces. Cut enough to tie each leaf to the tree, then slide the thread through the holes you punched out and tie the leaves to the tree. Keep your generation at the top of the tree, your parents in the middle level, and your grandparents at the bottom of your tree.
