Everyone loves a magic trick that involves something exciting...and this one is no exception. So grab your magic gear and get ready to learn…Will the Cards Match?! The only thing you need is a deck of cards!

deck of cards

Sometimes we use materials that require adult supervision…like scissors so make sure you have friends and family around whenever you do magic tricks!

  1. Take five playing cards from a deck. They can be any cards you want as along as they look different enough from each other. Show these cards to your audience to prove that they are all different.
  2. Tear the cards in half so that you now have ten card pieces. Place them face down on the table.
  3. Show your audience that there are five pieces in each pile by counting one of them. Be sure to count the cards in your selected pile from the top onto the table. This will reverse the order of the cards in the pile as you count. Once this is done, you’ll rely on mathematics for the rest of the trick.
  4. Now you will spell out the sentence, “Will the Cards Match?,” one word at a time. Pick up a card pile and take a card from the top to the bottom with each letter as you spell “Will.” You can start with either pile and switch at any letter and it will always work.
  5. After spelling the first word, take the top card from each pile and set them aside next to each other for later. The cards should match, but you don’t want to show the audience yet.
  6. Take a pile again and spell out “The” just as you did “Will,” taking the top card to the bottom of the pile with each letter. Once finished, you’ll take the top card from each pile again and set them aside. Thanks to mathematics, these cards should match up for the big reveal at the end.
  7. Repeat this process for spelling “Cards” and “Match,” taking the cards from top to bottom in the pile and placing the top cards from each pile aside after spelling each word. Once finished, you should have five pairs of card pieces face down on the table.
  8. Turn each pairs over to reveal to your audience that cards do indeed match!
