Sharks aren't scary, especially when Bruce Blitz draws them. Learn how to create a cool shark using a pen and a piece of paper.

Pad of paper
Pencil
Marker
Colored chalks or colored pencils
Eraser

SOMETIMES WE USE MATERIALS THAT REQUIRE ADULT SUPERVISION...LIKE SCISSORS...SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AROUND WHENEVER YOU DO CARTOONING!

  1. Use your pencil to make a diamond shape that is longer towards the back. Then draw a triangle for a back fin.
  2. Make a big smile, beginning and ending at the bottom 2 points of the diamond. Erase the connecting line of the mouth.
  3. Use your marker to draw a round eye with another one peaking out behind the head. Draw 2 block dots for pupils. Make thick eyebrows going down to make him look sinister.
  4. Go over pencil lines with your marker, drawing one clean line all the way around. Don’t make the fin a closed triangle; just trace around the body. Draw a small line at the end of his smile to show his mouth is wide open.
  5. Draw in a fin on top and a small one on his side. Draw a lot of pointed triangular teeth inside his mouth. Draw a tongue inside and darken in the area above and underneath is tongue, starting from the back of the mouth, about one-third of the way out.
  6. Next, add a small fish to the left of your shark. Draw a diamond shape and triangle for a back fin, wiggly lines on his back and a small fin on his side. Draw an eye with his eyelid half closed, a smile, and an eyebrow going up. Draw a line coming out his mouth and a musical note to show that he is whistling alone and has not noticed the shark behind him.
  7. Write the word “LUNCH!” with a cloud around it for a cartoon bubble and little circles to show that these are the shark’s thoughts. You can also draw drops of saliva coming out of the shark’s mouth.
  8. Use gray to color in the shark and red for his tongue. Draw a blue water line on top of the scene. Use yellow for the little fish.
