It's always a party when Sock Puppy is around. Dig into your sock drawer to create a cuddly new pal with puppeteer John Kennedy and his pal Tabitha. It's so fun and easy you can create a litter of sock puppies in no time!

tube sock
3 1/2 square of poster board
3 x 4 piece of fur
3 x 5 piece of batting
3 square of red felt
two 3/8 black pom-poms
1 black pom-pom
two 1 white pom-poms
sixteen 1/2 brown pom-poms
1 x 3 piece of pink sheet foam
black permanent marker
scissors
glue gun

REMEMBER THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WORK UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION. SOMETIMES WE USE OBJECTS THAT COULD BE HARMFUL, LIKE SCISSORS, SO DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE THESE PUPPETS ALONE.

  1. Trace and cut out the poster board mouth, the sheet foam tongue, the felt mouth and the fur ears from the patterns. Attach the poster board mouth to the toe of the sock: glue the sock tip, then roll the edge of the sock and press it against the poster board. The sock should not hang out over the edge of the poster board, and the seam of the sock should be hidden. Once you have the edge glued down, glue the rest of the poster board against the sock. Let the glue dry.
  2. Reach inside the sock and turn it inside out, so the poster board is on the inside. Smooth the red felt mouth and make sure there are no wrinkles, then glue it over the seam at the toe of the sock and over the piece of poster board inside the sock. Make sure the red felt covers the seam of the sock!
  3. Take your piece of batting, roll it in half and use a spot of glue to help it keep its shape. Then push the batting into the sock, but not all the way to the end. Put your hand in the sock and bend the poster board mouth in half. Push the batting so that it rests on top of your fingers when the mouth is closed, and not on the poster board.
  4. The 1” white and 3/8” black pom-poms are the eyes. Decide where the eyes will be on the sock and make a small cut to mark each place. The eyes should be against the batting. Glue a white pom-pom in each mark, make sure to glue it to both the batting and the sock. Then glue the black pupils in place to finish the eyes.
  5. The big black pom-pom will be the nose. Glue on the nose at the end of the mouth. Next, glue in the tongue. Just a spot of glue at the end of the tongue inside the mouth will work. Finally glue on the fur ears behind the eyes.
  6. Cut the elastic from the sock and discard it. Then cut about 2 1/2' from the bottom of the sock. Cut this piece into four equal-sized pieces. This will become the arms and legs. If your sock is longer or shorter, you might have to change the lengths or even cut the arms and legs from another sock.
  7. With the smooth side up, apply glue to on long edge of each sock piece, then roll the sock piece over to make a small tube. When dry, turn each rolled sock piece inside out so the fuzzy side is out. You can use a pen or pencil to help push the sock pieces inside out.
  8. Use the brown pom-poms for the paw pads. For each leg, glue three pom-poms on the end, and one pom-pom on the back of the leg. Then put a spot of glue about ½” up the leg and fold the leg over. This will create a bend in the leg.
  9. Glue the arms and legs on the puppet. The arms go beside the corner of the mouth on either side of the body. Glue the legs on the bottom of the sock, on the outside. Put your hand into the bottom of the puppet and move the lips to make it talk.

Hello Puppeteers! Thank you to Connor, Jessika, Lynnette, Sabrina, Kathryn, and Morgan for writing in to my blog and for being fans of my puppet projects. Lynnette had a great question from her teddy bear puppet, Kim! Kim asked how I thought of making the Convert-a-Bear Puppet. Well Kim, when I was in high school... [Read More]
