Grab your pen and get ready to draw an action pose of a guy running right off the page!

paper

marker
colored chalks or colored pencils

SOMETIMES WE USE MATERIALS THAT REQUIRE ADULT SUPERVISION...LIKE SCISSORS...SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AROUND WHENEVER YOU DO CARTOONING!

  1. Use your pencil to loosely draw a stick figure. You want to draw him like he’s running and be sure to add circles for his hands and feet.
  2. Start going over your stick figure in marker. Outline his face, adding an ear and hair going back.
  3. Add a long nose and 2 lines for an eye to show it’s a bit closed. Add an eyebrow going up and a large open-mouthed smile.
  4. Give him a collar, and add a sleeve for his t shirt. Draw in the arm that’s going towards the back, tapering the lines at the wrist, and draw his hand in a fist. Add some detail for knuckles.
  5. Finish drawing his t shirt and add his other sleeve and arm. Have this hand open, using your circle as a guide.
  6. Draw in his shorts and his leg, tapering the lines at the ankle. Add a line for his sock. Draw in his running shoes, giving him large feet. Add some traction to his shoes for detail.
  7. Draw in the back leg the same way, and add in laces to his shoes. Add some shadow to his back thigh since it’s in the background.
  8. Add a ground line below his feet, leaving some space to show speed. He should be floating.
  9. Add some motion lines, lightly, coming out of his feet with dust clouds at the end. Add a few lines at his arms too. Draw in a few drops of sweat around his head.
  10. Draw a lighter ground line in the background. Write the word “FINISH LINE” to his left, and an angled rectangular banner going around it. Draw two lines for posts going around the banner.
  11. Above the banner draw a trophy with two handles. Write “FIRST” on the trophy and draw a thought balloon around it. Add a few circles coming out of the cloud, towards his head to show that he’s thinking.
  12. Use peach for his body, green for the grass, yellow for the trophy. Draw in the #1 in blue. Use blue for his shorts, brown for his hair, and red for the motion lines.
