Cinco De Mayo: Serape

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in this colorful and traditional Mexican Serape!

REMEMBER THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WORK UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION. SOMETIMES WE USE THINGS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL, LIKE SCISSORS, SO DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE THESE CRAFT PROJECTS ALONE.

1. Take a piece of orange fleece and cut it large enough to wear over your body. It should fit over you shoulder to shoulder and neck to waist, and have 2 sides like a poncho.
2. Fold your fleece in half, and on the folded edge, cut a half circle. This will create the opening for your head.
3. Turn the poncho around and create a fringe pattern all along the bottom edge. Do this by making small vertical cuts on the bottom.
4. It’s time to decorate! Take your yellow fleece and cut out a zigzag pattern by cutting out small triangles from the edge. Fold over your fleece so you can cut 2 patterns out at the same time. Draw a guideline to cut along if you’re not comfortable doing it by freehand.
5. Follow your first line to cut out a zigzag stripe.
6. Repeat this process with all your colors.
7. Place your strips on your poncho and cut them to size.
8. Apply glue to the back.
9. Flip over and press down.
10. Repeat this process with the white fleece, then the green.
11. Continue with this pattern through the back of the serape, until you’re out of room. Set aside to dry for about 20 minutes and it’s ready to wear!
