Deck of playing cards

SOMETIMES WE USE MATERIALS THAT REQUIRE ADULT SUPERVISION…LIKE SCISSORS SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AROUND WHENEVER YOU DO MAGIC TRICKS!

  1. To prepare, take the 6 of diamonds of out of the deck of cards.
  2. Next, hold the deck of cards in your hand and remove five cards from the bottom of the deck. Place the 6 of diamonds face up on the bottom of the deck. Then replace the other five cards on the bottom face down (underneath the 6 of diamonds) *Note: This trick can work with other numbered cards as well. For example, if you use the number 8 then it goes seven from the bottom. Likewise for if you use 4; it goes 3 from the bottom.
  3. To begin, fan out the cards and have a friend select a card from the deck. (To prevent your friend from seeing the face up 6, fan out only the top half of the deck.) Tell your friend to remember their card.
  4. Now place the deck on the table. Tell your friend to cut the deck from right to left. Pick up the pack of cards on your left hand side. This pack should have the 6 of diamonds in it. Have your friend place their card on the top of the pack that is still on the table.
  5. Now place the pack of cards in your hand on top of the pack on the table.
  6. Pick up the entire deck of cards. Wave your hand over the deck and snap your fingers. Announce that a card has flipped face up. Fan through the cards and show your friend that the 6 of diamonds is now facing up. Assure your friend that you know that this was not their card.
  7. Tell your friend that the 6 of diamonds is simply a messenger card. This card tells you exactly where their card is. Since it is a 6, their card will be 6 cards below the 6 of diamonds.
  8. Place the cards that were on top of the 6 of diamonds on the bottom of the deck. Now place the 6 of diamonds on the table. Then count out five cards from the top of the deck and place those cards on the table face down. Ask your friend what their card was. Then, pull out the 6th card from the deck: your friend’s card!
