A deck of playing cards

SOMETIMES WE USE MATERIALS THAT REQUIRE ADULT SUPERVISION…LIKE SCISSORS SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AROUND WHENEVER YOU DO MAGIC TRICKS!

  1. To prepare for the trick, take a shuffled deck of cards and remember the bottom card.
  2. To begin, turn the deck face down and fan out the cards. Have a friend choose any card they want out of the deck, as long as it’s not the bottom card. Have them memorize the card and show your audience, but don’t let them show you.
  3. Gather the rest of the deck back together and hold it face down with your right hand. Take your left thumb and run it down the side of the deck as if to page through it. Have your friend tell you when to stop.
  4. Once you’ve stopped, use your right index finger to swing out the top part of the deck where you’ve stopped thumbing it and slide it into your free left hand.
  5. Have your friend place his or her card onto the top of that part of the deck. Place the bottom part of the deck on top of your friend’s card. Now the card you memorized before the trick started is on top of the card your friend selected.
  6. To really sell your trick, cut the deck a few more times.
  7. Tell your friend that you’re going to find their card. Turn the deck towards you and run through the cards and find the bottom card that you remembered earlier. The card that your friend selected will be the card before that one.
  8. Once you’ve found your memorized card, cut the deck one more time to bring that card back to the bottom of the deck. Now the card your friend selected is at the top of the deck.
  9. Once you’ve found your memorized card, cut the deck one more time to bring that card back to the bottom of the deck. Now the card your friend selected is at the top of the deck and it’s time for your secret move to finish the trick.
  10. After your friend tells you that you’ve selected the wrong card, hold the deck in your right hand facing inward with your thumb and index finger on the sides about a half inch from the top. Spread out your other fingers to make sure your friend and audience know that they’re not involved in the trick. Take your left index finger and rub it back and forth across the top of the deck a few times to make it look like you’re magically raising your friend’s card with it. Be sure no one can see the back of the deck. On the last rub of your finger, take your pinky and use it to raise your friend’s card about 3/4 of the way up from behind the deck behind your finger. Once the card has risen, retract your pinky and remove your hand to reveal it to your friend.
