Join Origami host Barbara Pearl as she teaches you step by step how to fold one of the earth's most amazing endangered species. This whale origami would make a perfect gift and project for Earth day!

A standard 6 or 8 inch square piece of origami paper

REMEMBER THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WORK UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION. SOMETIMES WE USE THINGS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL, SO DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE THESE PROJECTS ALONE.

  1. Place the paper white-side-up on the table and fold it in half to make a triangle. Bring the bottom corner to the top corner and slide your finger down the center and from side to side. This is called the “T Technique.”
  2. Unfold the paper and rotate it so the crease runs vertically. Take one edge of the square paper and fold it in to run against that crease. Repeat that step with the bordering edge to create a kite fold. These folds should come together to create a colored triangle.
  3. Take the top point of your kite shape (the top point of the remaining white triangle) and fold it down to the base of the colored triangle, creasing it sharply.
  4. Rotate the paper so that your colored triangle points to the right. Fold everything in half along the original crease.
  5. Take the right point of your shape and fold it upward to create the whale’s tail. Draw or glue on eyes to complete your whale.
  6. For an additional surprise, turn your whale up onto its head and it also works as a penguin!
