It’s time to bring some sunshine into your space with this Sun Catcher! This simple sun catcher will brighten up any window just in time for springtime.

Black poster board or construction paper
Glue
Scissors
Red cellophane
Gold string
Utility knife
White crayon
Plastic cutting board

REMEMBER THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WORK UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION. SOMETIMES WE USE THINGS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL, LIKE SCISSORS, SO DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE THESE CRAFT PROJECTS ALONE.

  1. Take your black poster board or construction paper and fold it in half.
  2. In this example, you’ll be creating a sun shape on your poster board but you can create whatever you want. Take a white crayon and draw a circle in the center of your folded poster board, followed by four triangles, one on each side pointing outward. These will eventually be cut out so that cellophane may show through them.
  3. Draw a border around the outside of the triangles to finish the sun shape.
  4. Next you’re going to start cutting the shapes out of the sun. Place the folded poster board onto a cutting board and with a utility knife, cut out the circle and the four triangles. Make sure you cut through both parts of the folded poster as you’ll want the shapes to be removed on both sides.
  5. Once you’ve cut the windows out of your sun, cut the rest of it out with scissors along the borderlines. Again, be sure to cut through both pieces of the folded poster board as you’ll want two shapes to sandwich the cellophane between.
  6. Take your two sun catcher shapes and coat one side of each shape with glue. Coat thinly so it won’t smear onto the cellophane.
  7. Cut out a piece of red cellophane larger than your sun catcher and press it down firmly onto one of the glue coated shapes. You can also use a different color of cellophane if you prefer.
  8. Cut a piece of gold string and tie it into a loop.
  9. Add dab of glue to the cellophane just above the circular hole in your sun and set the tied end of your string into it. Now you’ll be able to hang your sun catcher up when you’re finished.
  10. Place the other sun shape glued side down over the cellophane, lining it up with the first shape to sandwich the cellophane between them. Let it dry for about 10 minutes.
  11. Trim the excess cellophane off around the edges of your sun catcher and you’re ready to hang it up in your window!
