REMEMBER THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WORK UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION. SOMETIMES WE USE THINGS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL, LIKE SCISSORS, SO DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE THESE CRAFT PROJECTS ALONE.

  1. Start by creating a bird to go on your wind sock. Draw the body of your bird onto your light blue sheet foam with a marker. The body should consist of a small circle (the head) attached to a larger circle. You can also use cardboard if you don’t have foam.
  2. Cut out the body of the bird and glue it down onto your dark blue sheet foam (the base of your wind sock) in the center.
  3. On the remaining light blue sheet foam, draw a squiggly tuft of hair for your bird. Cut it out.
  4. Glue the tuft of hair to your bird’s head.
  5. Time to make the wings. Divide the rest of the light blue foam in half with your marker and create a scalloped edge around the dividing line.
  6. Cut out the first scalloped half of foam, rounding off the areas where you made previous cuts for the hair and body. Cut it into a wing shape with the scalloped edge being the feathers.
  7. Hold the wing over the other half of foam and cut around it to make another wing of the same size. You’ll glue the wings on last so set them aside for now.
  8. Cut a circle out of the light blue sticky felt to make a belly for the bird.
  9. Peel the backing off of the belly and stick it where it should be on the bird’s body. You can always use regular felt and glue if you don’t have sticky felt.
  10. For the bird’s legs, cut out a small rectangle of orange sheet foam.
  11. On the rectangle, draw a u-shape onto the orange sheet foam with feet on each end. Cut them out.
  12. Lift up the bottom of the bird’s body up and slide the bird’s legs up underneath with the feet sticking out. Since there’s already glue on the back of the bird, you can just press the body back down over the legs to secure them.
  13. Glue two large googly eyes to the head of your bird. You can always draw or paint eyes on if you don’t have them.
  14. For the beak, cut a piece of yellow foam into a square.
  15. Fold the square diagonally to make an open triangle. Glue the bottom half of the beak to the bird’s head underneath the eyes.
  16. Add a line of glue to the base of each wing and apply them to either side of the bird’s body. This way, the wings will spread out when you roll up the finished wind sock. Set everything aside to dry for about 15 minutes.
  17. To create the sock, take the dark blue foam attached to the bird and twist it into a cylinder. You may have to loosen up the bird a bit to do this.
  18. Tape the inner edges of the cylinder together.
  19. Bend down the beak of the bird to give it a little more personality if you want.
  20. Cut out ten strips of blue cellophane for the streamers. You can also use a blue recycling bag. Each streamer should be about 2” thick.
  21. Tape the ends of the streamers to the inside of your wind sock at the bottom. Make sure they overlap each other a little bit.
  22. Take a utility knife and poke three holes into the top of the wind sock: one in the back and one on each side of the bird’s head.
  23. Cut two pieces of gold string about 6” long each. Cut another piece about 12” long.
  24. Poke one of the shorter strings through one of the side holes. Tie a double knot in the end and pull it through so the knot meets the foam of the sock. Repeat with the second short string on the other side hole.
  25. Turn your wind sock over and poke the long string through the back hole just as you did with the shorter ones. Tie a knot at the end of your string.
  26. Gather all three strings at the top of the sock and tie them together into a knot. Make sure the knot is right in the center so that the sock will hang straight.
  27. Take the excess string above the knot and tie it into a loop. Now your wind sock is ready to hang!
