Want to wow the crowd at your table? Join magician Ryan Oakes as he shows you the Ring Off String trick! All you need is a ring and some string and you'll be creating some amazing Dinner Table Magic.

A piece of thin string or shoelace
A key ring or finger ring

SOMETIMES WE USE MATERIALS THAT REQUIRE ADULT SUPERVISION…LIKE SCISSORS SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AROUND WHENEVER YOU DO MAGIC TRICKS!

  1. Hold the key ring in your left hand using your bottom two fingers and your thumb, keeping your index and middle fingers free.
  2. With your right hand, take your string and thread through the ring until the ring is situated at the string’s halfway point, holding the string that’s threaded through with your free fingers in your left hand. Show this to your audience so that they see that the ring is attached to the string.
  3. Place your right thumb underneath the portion of the string threaded between the ring and your left index and middle fingers.
  4. With your thumb in place, grab the string on both sides of your fingers and pull it the rest of the way through the ring. The way you’re holding the ring and string in your left hand should conceal this.
  5. With your left hand, pinch the ring against the middle of the string while pulling on the ends of the string with your right hand. From your audience’s point of view, the ring will still appear to be on the string. Pull on the ends of the string a few more time to really sell it.
  6. Pull on the string one last time and pull it from your left hand leaving the ring behind. It will look like the ring magically melted through the string!
  7. Time for phase 2. Have an assistant hold one end of the string and thread your end back through the ring to the halfway point. Show your audience that the ring is on there again and hold your end of the string with your left hand.
  8. Instruct your assistant to pull on his or her end of her string tightly, creating some tautness in it.
  9. With your right hand, hold the ring at the center of the string in a way that your thumb is pointing backward the audience and your fingers face you.
  10. Twist the ring to your right towards yourself, creating a knot. Lay the ring on to the string to create a straight line with it.
  11. Thread your end of the string through the ring to create what you tell your audience will be a second knot. Be sure to thread it on the same side as your first knot.
  12. Pull your end of the string tight, making sure that the two knots are directly across from each other on the ring and won’t slip off.
  13. Grab the ring with your right hand, loosen your end of the string with your left hand, and the knots will release the ring, making it look like it has magically melted through the string again!
